Clinical guidelines - a mixed blessing

By: Anonymous - Fri 10/28/2005 PM
It is great to know what one should do, and how to work up and treat patients based on evidence, consensus, and economic justification.

However, once guidelines are established - they seem to simply provide fuel for the lawyers when there is a "variation" in them.

Maybe, patients should log onto a doctors website, and follow the algorithm. If they get better, that is great. If they don't, then they need help - the doctor may use their JUDGEMENT - and the patient may be appreciative, even if a miracle is not performed.
